Watching Ice Hockey

Wow!  You've been asked to go and watch the fastest team sport on the planet.  Problem is,.. what the heck is happening????

Relax; the whole game of Ice Hockey is quite an simple one to get a grip on.  Once you have familiarised yourself with the basic rules, you should be able to come to terms with how the flow of the game works.

Now you can also read about what to wear to a rink, but rest assured, with all that ice, it will be cold, normally as cold as your refrigerator!  Even if it is a 30 degree summer's day outside, you will need suitable warm stuff if you are not moving around a lot (skating).

Now the important stuff - {important for your safety}

There are nets around, sit behind them!  That puck weighs a fair bit, is hard and it moves FAST!  Those annoying nets are there to protect you.  Some players will sit away from the net and not raise the ire of the staff, but that is because they are familiar with the flow and speed of the game.  Most of the time, smart players will spectate from behind nets too!

Keep you eye on the play unless it stops!  OK, You have the nets, but I think I mentioned that the puck moves very fast?  I personally do not encourage taking your eyes off the play unless play is stopped for a penalty / break.  Pour your hot drinks during these times.

Make noise!  One of the few places where you are encouraged to make noise is at the hockey!  There will be magnificent plays from both teams and appreciating excellence is always a good thing.  Of course, cheer a little louder for your team!

Take it teasy on the Officials!  For the majority of situations in Australia, the officials on the ice are volunteers or are paid enough to cover fuel costs.  The game is fast and with 12 players on the ice, damn near impossible to police effectively at all points.  Remember that they are human too.  Believe me, the players and coaching staff will make more than enough noise if there is something happening that is being missed consistently.
